AUTO BILD Wallbox Test 2024/2025: What makes the Elli Charger Pro 2 the winner?

In a comprehensive charger test conducted by AUTO BILD and P3, the Elli Charger Pro 2 secured first place. Discover the methodology behind the test and why this smart charging device managed to impress the jury in this blog post.

The AUTO BILD and P3 Wallbox Benchmark is an annual test of the best chargers on the market, focusing on functionality, user-friendliness, innovation, and cost efficiency. The Elli Charger Pro 2 outperformed seven competitors, scoring 83.9 points (grade 1.4). According to AUTO BILD and P3, the Elli Charger Pro 2 demonstrates "impressive future-proofing and a clear focus on the end user."

How AUTO BILD and P3 test chargers

AUTO BILD and P3 tested only popular, networked AC (alternating current) chargers for home use in the 2024 evaluation. The models were divided into two groups: those with a maximum charging capacity of 11 kW, and those capable of 22 kW. At the cutting-edge test laboratory in Osnabrück, P3 conducted a detailed analysis covering 115 criteria, considering both installer and end-user perspectives.

Key evaluation criteria:

Installation

The evaluation began with the packaging concept and the user-friendliness of the instruction manual. The chargers’ design was also assessed: Are there sharp edges? Is the interior well-organized with enough space for wiring and connections? Additionally, the ease of configuration for electricians was examined.

Charging process

The testers used a specialized simulator to assess the communication between chargers and vehicles. The devices were then subjected to endurance testing with real EVs such as the Mini Cooper SE and BMW iX3. Impressively, none of the devices experienced charging interruptions. Standby power consumption, ranging from 1.1 to 5.6 watts, was also measured in the lab. Safety features were a major focus of the analysis.

Smart charging behavior

Since EVs require significant amounts of electricity, the efficiency of dynamic current regulation was a key aspect. The analysis examined how well this is achieved using built-in accessories and external devices. Cybersecurity of the chargers was also thoroughly assessed by a P3 expert team.

Operation and connectivity

Testers evaluated the chargers’ display features and connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, LTE, and Bluetooth. Additionally, they assessed how users can initiate charging – whether without authorization, via an app, or using an RFID card. The usability and functionality of the smartphone app and web interface were also tested.

Features that convinced the jury about the Elli Charger Pro 2:

Intelligent charging technologies for maximum efficiency

A standout feature was the integration of real-time electricity prices via the European Power Exchange (EPEX SPOT). This enables users to significantly reduce charging costs by aligning charging times with low-tariff periods. The capability for photovoltaic surplus charging, allowing direct integration with home solar systems, also impressed the experts.

Future-proof connectivity

With LTE connectivity and over-the-air updates, the Elli Charger Pro 2 remains technologically up-to-date. These features ensure the charger is not only fit for today’s needs but is also well-prepared for future requirements.

Cross-brand flexibility

The Elli Charger Pro 2 was specifically developed for Volkswagen, CUPRA, and Škoda brands. This multi-brand compatibility sets it apart from competitors, enabling seamless integration with vehicle data such as charging profiles, departure times, and battery status – for optimized charging processes and better energy efficiency.
